With many Arsenal fans seeing the widely reported signing of Andre dos Santos from Fernerbahce, it is now being reported that Arsenal are now following up the landing of the Brazilian by stepping up pursuit of German defender Per Mertesacker, who has been a reported target for a good part of the summer.
It was revealed by Sportsmail that Werder Bremen’s financial status is currently unfavourable and that they would have to consider offers for their star centre-back.
French publication L’Equipe claims the deal is close to being done with Arsenal offering £8.8m for the experienced defender, although in contrast German source Bild report that the deal is far from being complete. So things are definitely not concrete at present, with only interest clear.
The tall German would bring much needed height and experience, having a wealth of it at international level, to the Arsenal backline, as well as being a threat on set-pieces at the attacking end of the pitch.
At 26 he would at least have a few more good years at his peak performance, although issues have been raised about his mobility with the pacy attack of Premier League.
I have no qualms about trying to lure Mertesacker, as even though Djourou and Koscielny have pace in their own right they simply do not have adequate positioning to deal with good attack anyway, which was brutally exploited by Manchester United at the weekend. Also his height would provide a great asset in defensive set-pieces.
What do you think? Would Mertesacker be a great signing for the gunners? Or would his lack of mobility hinder his ability to succeed in the Premier League? Leave your comments below!
UPDATE: Reports now suggest Mertesacker is set to have a medical at Arsenal today as the closing of the transfer looms!
