It has been revealed by former Arsenal target and Spanish maestro Juan Mata that Arsenal were indeed interested in his services, but he snubbed the approach as he considered the gunner’s no longer able to contend for the Premier League title.
On the situation he said to the Sun: “I want to come to England to win trophies – and that’s why I accepted Chelsea’s offer.
“It was also a question of sporting achievement, not money. Arsenal and Tottenham were both interested in me but they did not compare with the Blues.
“I want the Premier League title and this is possible at Chelsea.
“Fernando Torres helped influence my decision but speaking directly with Villas-Boas was the decisive factor.
“He explained how his style will be based on 4-3-3 and how important I will be to his plans.
“Frank Lampard is a monster of a footballer to play alongside and the prospect of that is incredible.”
This opinion surely confirms what many Arsenal fan’s feared and that is Arsenal’s current inability to lure top-class players, particularly evident after the sale of Cesc Fabregas and now possibly Samir Nasri.
The snub comes at a time where Arsenal is in major disarray, which could lead to a unstoppable downward spiral if Arsene does not stop the current exodus of players and restores some of the former glory the gunners once had when they had the likes of Vieira, Henry, Bergkamp and Pires. It is imperative if he wants to lure top-class players in the future.
With only one week left in the transfer window, it seems Arsene can no longer rely on Arsenal’s proud reputation to lure in top-class players that used to have the desire to play at the Emirates for the long-term and I feel he must pay the inflated prices he so much despises to have any chance of returning Arsenal to their former Champion status. But his stubbornness in not paying inflated prices could prove to be Arsenal’s undoing.
What do you think? Do you agree? Will the downward spiral continue if Arsene isn’t successful in getting a top-class player before the transfer window ends? Leave your comment below!
