It is no secret that the role Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey will play in the Arsenal first team will be much more crucial following the departure of our former captain Cesc Fabregas, with Arsene utilising him in pre-season and in the Premier League in Fabregas’ usual position.
Although he has his sceptics, Ramsey has shown the potential to fill the Fab-gap with his performance against Udinese in the Champions League qualifier, looking very composed in a rattled team with a high-work rate and great forward runs, only perhaps with his final ball and small mental lapses which need addressing. These should improve with match-time though hopefully.
Within the match he set up the winner for Walcott and looks as though he has the ability to take up Fabregas’ mantle, with the Spaniard himself saying he will be the future of Arsenal.
Following the tie, French defender Bacary Sagna voiced his agreement with Fabregas saying: “Fabregas is a great player. He was one of our best players but that’s part of football.
“Every season we start a season and some players leave at the end of it. That’s what happens and I just want to wish him good luck.
“I will miss him of course but Ramsey did very well and he will show he is a great player as well.”
Although, I myself was also sceptical about Ramsey’s step-up to the first team, I think he is really eager to prove himself to the fans and looks motivated and hungry with a skill-set that shows he will be a very solid, if not a great, player for Arsenal this coming season.
One thing he does show is great loyalty to the club, and I am hoping it is this passion that ignites his ongoing success in the first team. With more match experience I feel he could become a great player, but I can’t help but feel in the meantime perhaps a experienced and creative midfielder should be signed in to provide more depth in the squad.
What do you think? Is Ramsey good enough to hold his place as Arsenal’s new attacking midfielder and continue to improve? Or should a replacement be signed to help fill the Fab-gap and provide more depth to the Arsenal squad? Leave a comment below.
