After being widely reported that Arsenal had clinched Mikel Arteta in the very last closing stages of the transfer window, it has now been confirmed by the official Arsenal website that Arsenal has signed the Spaniard on a four-year deal, now subject to formal registration processes.
The move for the Spaniard comes as a like for like replacement for departed former captain Cesc Fabregas and the 29-year old is sure to bring much Premier League experience and leadership for the young players in the team.
The Spaniard has represented Spain at under-21 level and was a former trainee at Barcelona FC. His style of play is characterised by great close control and excellent dribbling skills as well as the ability for creative play, being very prolific in his final ball.
It was only at Everton where his ability on attack was nourished, where everyone originally thought he was a defensive midfielder and has had great success with the toffees since his move from Real Sociedad.
It is reported Arteta handed in a transfer request just before the deadline. Toffee’s manager David Moyes said on the transfer: “Mikel indicated to me that he wished to join Arsenal if a bid came in.
“I am very disappointed to lose him but the prospect of Champions League football was something I wasn’t able to offer him.”
Literally, this very day, marks an exciting day for Arsenal fans as four experienced players permanently join the ranks of Arsenal’s squad. Those being Park Chu-Young, Andre dos Santos, Per Mertesacker and now Mikel Arteta. The season for this team starts after the international break!
