In what must be an absolute priority for the club, contract negotiations between Arsenal and star forward Robin van Persie have stalled following revelations by the player himself hinting that he does not want to negotiate until next summer.
Out of the four Arsenal stars with only 12 months remaining on their contract come next summer, which also includes the likes of Theo Walcott, Andrey Arshavin and Thomas Vermaelen, I am not hesitant at all to say the Dutchman must be the top priority player to re-sign.
The Dutchman said regarding prospects of contract negotiations:
Maybe I’ll leave it [holding immediate talks] because the main thing for me is the team and that we play well
I do believe you have to look for a right moment to sit down and speak about your own stuff. It’s not only about me, it’s about the team. We are not talking now because we are so busy – we have games every three or four days.
I don’t think it’s clever to do that during the season. I still have almost two years left here, so for the moment that’s fine. But I don’t know, we will have to look.
I’m happy with my contract, I’m good. That’s how it is, I can’t say much more. I can’t look into the future.
To also add to Van Persie’s revelations regarding contract negotiations, it was also revealed by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger that the Dutchman had approached him regarding the direction of the club saying on the matter:
It’s true that we had a meeting during the summer. If you’re in Robin’s place and you see Nasri going, Fabregas going, then you can be worried of course.
I would be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about the situation and if he does indeed leave it would be a huge loss for the team. Although in saying this the prolific top-class goalscorer has given many years to Arsenal and deserves to be winning silverware. I just hope the team can rally this season and fight towards that top-four spot and some kind of silverware to help persuade RVP that the Emirates is where he belongs!
