After what was a long and draining transfer saga, the completion of Cesc Fabregas‘ move to Barca has now seen the former Arsenal captain publicly jump to Arsene Wenger’s defence amidst the angst among Barcelona fans.
There is no doubt Barca got their man on the cheap, a fact recently backed up by the Barcelona Vice President Josep Maria Bartomeu who said he is probably worth Arsenal’s initial asking price of £53m after recent performances, but anger still resides with the Barcelona fans who criticise Wenger for ‘abducting’ Cesc when he was a youth player.
Launching a formidable defence for Arsene Wenger, the Spaniard said about the current view among the Spanish Club’s fanbase:
That is the wrong picture of him, had it not been for him, I would not now be a Barca player, without him I would not have made my debut by 16, played in the final of the Champions League at 18 and been team captain by 20.
Without him I would not be a Barca player now, he convinced the owners of Arsenal, who would not sell under any circumstances, to lower the price.
To be honest, they should be completely grateful for what Arsene has done for Fabregas’ career. It was shame to see him go and for so cheap to, but it had to be done as his head was no longer at Arsenal and it seems the transfer wouldn’t have happened without Arsene swaying the board into lowering the asking price.
