It was rumoured Arsenal tabled approximately a £10m dollar bid for the English defender in the last transfer window which was then ridiculed by Bolton chairman Phil Gartside who re-tweeted ‘Are you taking the p***? £6m for Gary Cahill — f*** right off!’
Wenger said on the possibility of signing Cahill:
Cahill is good enough to play Champions League, but he is not someone I would be interested in.
I have got five central defenders – [Laurent] Koscielny, [Sebastien] Squillaci, Mertesacker, [Thomas] Vermaelen and [Johan] Djourou. Of this five, four are international players.
We were in the market in the summer, but at that time they [Bolton] were greedy.
Too be honest I completely agree. Bolton took a massive risk by keeping Cahill in an attempt to spark a bidding war and get maximum return on their prized asset this January, but with Arsenal out of the race it is just another club that won’t be pushing the price up. Based on recent performances I would pick Koscielny and Vermaelen ahead of Cahill anyway!
