It has been confirmed by Arsenal’s official website that defensive midfielder Alex Song will serve a one-match suspension when the Gunners face Aston Villa on Wednesday night after collecting his fifth yellow card of the season on the weekend.
The Cameroon international has become a driving force in the midfield for Arsenal not just defensively but also venturing forward and providing vital passes that have secured many wins this season, including the sumptuous lobbed ball through to Van Persie in their 1-nil victory over Everton last week.
This will come as a blow to the Arsenal faithful as they look to rebound from the 1-nil loss at the hands of League leaders Manchester City on Wednesday night against a struggling Aston Villa side, and reports initially suggested that Mikel Arteta too will be sidelined, however he is available as he has received only four bookings and will be keen to avoid the fifth in the distant future with the holiday schedule heating up.
Emmanuel Frimpong seems the likely candidate to replace Song this Wednesday, with Coquelin too pushing for a start. So at least the Gunners have some decent back ups with one of their most consistent performers in Alex Song out ahead of the tough tie away to Aston Villa. Wenger will also be without defender Johan Djourou who is likely to be out for around three weeks after suffering a groin injury against Manchester City, meaning youngster Miquel will get another shot to prove his ability.
