The 18 year old summer signing from Southampton had a flying start to life at the Emirates after scoring in his first two starts for the Gunners first team in the Carling Cup and Champions League. The U21 England international performed sensationally against Manchester City this week which has led Wenger to announce that it is not too early for ‘Chambo’ to play in the league anymore after the managers patient approach.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has been scaring defences with his electrifying pace and quick ball skills, as well as his dangerous shooting. Consequently the media have tipped the youngster to be included in England’s senior side for the upcoming Euro championship next summer. Wenger believes that it would be beneficial however he does not want him weighed down by expectation:
I would like to see [him go to Euro 2012] but let’s go step by step, I think in England you always take the fast track. To go to the European Championships you need experience in the Premier League so it is important he gets that first.
At the moment we have been quite consistent with the team we put out because we are on a good run and have had no injuries.
I believe he is still in a period where training every day with top players is important for him to improve. He has quality when he plays in games – he is not fazed by the importance of them. He’s the kind of personality that makes you think he can play on the big stage.
You have seen him already before Christmas and I have no restrictions at all. For me, if I need him he will play. I don’t think it is too early for him to play anymore.
Personally I would like to see more of the talented youngster over the winter period which will be very demanding on the squad. With Gervinho set to leave in January for the African’s Nations Cup it will allow ‘The Ox’ to be unleashed which will add even more pace to the Gunners frontline. Walcott has been performing well of late so it will be difficult for Oxlade-Chamberlain to get a starting birth, however if he does bide his time as Wenger insists then he will get a chance to prove himself in the Premier League soon enough.
