According to Caught Offside Arsene Wenger is considering launching a £4.1m offer to sign Barcelona veteran Eric Abidal this month, as the French international’s contract with the Catalan giants expires at the end of the season.
Pep Guardiola will naturally be unhappy to loose such a vital, experienced defender especially as Abidal has also been a regular fill in at centre back when either of the regular duo Piqué and Puyol are injured.
However lengthy contract talks between Barcelona and Abidal have apparently stalled so it seems likely that the 32 year old may leave the Nou Camp either this month or the coming summer.
Abidal has spent four and a half years at Barcelona and has won copious amounts of trophies in his time in Spain, and even overcame a liver tumour last March. He would be a great purchase for Arsenal in theory, however practically it is not feasible with Wenger putting his long term faith in the injury plagued Keiran Gibbs and Brazilian Andre Santos who are currently injured, however Gibbs isn’t far from returning.
A loan move for Abidal would be extremely ideal, however there is as a much likelihood of this happening as Almunia keeping a clean sheet. But Wenger has stated that he is not close to any loan moves as of yet and the Gunners defence is depleting even more game by game… Time to act Wenger otherwise we will be trophy-less again.
