Andrey Arshavin’s former employers Zenit St Petersburg have admitted that they have opened negotiations with Arsenal over their misfiring little Russian, but a loan deal may be the best solution for the time being.
Arshavin has dropped down the pecking order in recent months, and has been restricted to only the odd cameo off the bench since the purchase of Gervinho over the summer and the emergence of youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
With Euro 2012 looming, it is understood that Arshavin needs more high level match time otherwise he may not be selected for his country. The Russian winger dropped down into the reserves side this week along with fellow first teamers Park Chu Young and Yossi Benayoun, with Arshavin netting a brace in their 5-0 rout of Norwich.
The Russian leagues transfer window remains open until Friday, so Zenit are eager to nut out a deal before then. The clubs general director Maxim Mitrofanov said:
Arshavin would interest us in terms of having him on loan.
(As well as helping Zenit) Andrei would also be well prepared for the upcoming Euro 2012 finals. The question is what Arsenal really want, would they want a loan deal?
We had (initial) talks with them. Let’s see how they respond now.
The fact is Andrei still wants to play in England. But he really wants to do well at Euro. (Zenit) would be a good solution for him in this case.
Initially I thought Arsenal should certainly take this opportunity to offload the Russian that has disappointed in recent months, but he has shown glimpses of his quality namely the match winning cross against Sunderland.
He should be sold this summer, but what happens if the Gunners suffer a winger injury crisis during the remainder of the season? It’s happened time and time again, and I would much prefer Arshavin filling in out wide then the likes of Benayoun or Rosicky.
What do you think? Should Arshavin be loaned back to Russia? The main plus sides to a temporary move would be that he will get himself back into the Euro 2012 side and possibly add to his exponentially decreasing value and he will be off Arsenal’s wage bill…
