According to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal are set to steal Ajax’s top defender Jan Vertonghen from Tottenham Hotspur’s and Newcastle’s clutches, both of whom have been tracking the defender all season.
It is reported the Belgium international secretly came and visited the Emirates for their second leg Champions League victory against AC Milan.
Apparently Vertonghen visited close friend and international team-mate Thomas Vermaelen telling him that he was very impressed with the football Arsenal produced.
It is no secret the Belgian is very likely to be leaving this summer after himself admitting publicly he is ready for a move and that Ajax have not offered him a new mega-deal after sensing he is likely to leave.
Vertonghen said on his possible future:
I am ready for a move abroad now. I have played at Ajax for almost six years in the first team and I think it is time to make another step in my career.
They [Ajax] have said they want to sit down and talk about a new deal, but I think they realise that I could be leaving anyway. And I do think that a nice move is on the way for me.
Vertonghen was part of a great partnership with Vermaelen at Ajax in 2008 where the club had one of their most successful seasons.

While he would be a great player for Arsenal, with Koscielny and Vermaelen playing so great together at the moment and also Mertesacker, Squillaci and Djourou on the bench Wenger would most likely have to sell before buying the Belgian. Although in saying this Vertonghen can be a versatile player who can play at left-back and as a defensive midfielder so would be very helpful for what seems like an injury cursed squad.
