Former Gunner Sol Campbell earlier this week made it clear it is imperative for Arsenal to make a host of new signings this summer, and Wenger has reiterated that the club will keep looking for the right players so they can challenge for the top honours next season.
Wenger told Arsenal’s official website:
What has not changed at all is our policy that we will be as ambitious as ever and spend the money we have available, if possible in an intelligent and wise way.
We have always spent money because we are ambitious for top-class players and if you look at the history of our last 15 years, we have always had top-class players. Sol Campbell is one of them.
The Frenchman is well aware that the big spenders City, Chelsea and United can outbid them in the race for top players, but he still believes Arsenal can attract top talent and compete for all the major trophies in which he rates the Premier League and the Champions League the most.
It does not mean you cannot win the title. There are two basic trophies for me that are the sign of the quality of a team; they are the Premier League and the Champions League.
The Champions League is prestigious and it is half league and half cup. That means that at the end, the teams who wins must show real quality.
All the rest, they are trophies of course and they are important, but they do not really reflect the deep quality of a team. The championship does, and we want to win it.
Our ambition is intact, to win the championship. It depends on how we finish the season to decide how much we need to buy to have a chance to win the championship next season.
While Wenger believes that Arsenal have always shown ambition in the market, I must beg to differ. Last summer was a prime example, Juan Mata was available on a platter yet the Gunners failed to move quickly enough the swoop the Spanish star and now he is a top class Premier League act in Chelsea colours.
Wenger and his negotiating men should also have snapped up Hazard from Lille last summer too before he became well known by every club under the sun that will now produce a bidding war between footballing giants Madrid, City and United for the Belgian’s signature.
This summer Wenger will dilly-dally around until he finally manages to sell Bendtner, Aluminia and the like then M’Vila will be at Madrid with Vertoghen signing for United. Yes you have to be intelligent and wise Wenger but intelligence in the transfer market is to move swiftly and get the deal done before any other club can get their nose in!
But for us to win the championship next season we must bring one or two strikers one of which will be Podolski, as well as a new attacking midfielder to challenge Ramsey and Rosicky for a place and another versatile defender such as Vertonghen. But I don’t see Wenger buying in some of these areas as he has such faith in Ramsey and Djourou who perhaps need loan spells. I guess we must wait and see how Wenger deals with the likes of Vela, Bendtner and Joel Campbell when they return from their loan spells as well as the future of Robin Van Persie.
