Gunners captain and talisman Robin van Persie has received the 2012 Footballer of the Year award by the Football Writers’ Association.

The 28-year-old pipped Manchester United’s forward Wayne Rooney (2nd), Rooney’s team-mate Paul Scholes (3rd) and Fulham’s Clint Dempsey (4th) to the prestigious Premier League personal accolade.

Van Persie’s impressive tally of 34 goals in all competitions has not only won the striker the PFA and FWA player of the year award, but he has been the driving force for the Gunners resurgent run up the table where they are now close to the illustrious third place in the league which means automatic qualification into the Champions League.

Van Persie will receive his award at a gala dinner at the Lancaster London Hotel on May 3. FWA chairman Steve Bates, chief football writer at The People, said:

Robin was the overwhelming choice of our members this season and deservedly so after a magnificent campaign for Arsenal.

The quality of his goals, attacking movement and consistency in a turbulent season for the Gunners has been eye-catching. The considerable size of his majority in the votes cast by our members reflected the general view that he has been the season’s most outstanding individual performer.

Van Persie has been simply outstanding and even when he is presented little opportunities in a match the striker manages to come up with the goods in vital situations that has allowed the Gunners to claim all three points on multiple occasions thanks to the genius RVP.

His latest award further illustrates the importance of the Dutchman in Arsenal’s quest for silverware and if they can retain his services then next season will be a big one for the North London side that has gone seven seasons without a trophy.

Either way he fully deserves the accolades that he has been receiving so congratulations captain Vantastic, an outstanding season.
