To the delight of the Gunners, Tottenham lost to QPR last game-week and look to be out of the race for third spot and will be now hoping to simply just pip Newcastle for fourth.
At present, Arsenal are three points clear in third place with Newcastle trailing by three points and Tottenham trailing by six. Although in saying this both Toon and Spurs have a game in hand.
Arguably Arsenal have the easiest run-in with Stoke, Norwich and West Brom left to play, but this also could be said about Tottenham who have Bolton, Aston Villa and Fulham left to play. On the other side of the coin however Newcastle clearly have the hardest path with Chelsea, Manchester City and Everton still to play.
As we know though there are never easy games in the Premier League and to secure third it looks probable that two hard fought wins out of three should be able to secure a third place finish.
Wenger said on official website Arsenal.com:
We will see at the end of the season [whether Saturday was a missed opportunity]. We are still in the driving seat, no matter what happens.
It will depend on the results we make now. We have difficult games – we go to Stoke, to West Brom, not easy places, and we play Norwich at home. At least two of the next three we need to win.
It is no secret that Arsenal often struggle against Stoke’s aerial threat and physical presence, but with our solid and consistent back-five in play Arsenal should be favourites to come out with the points.
Hopefully the men in red will be able to regain the fluidity and crispness on attack that was lacking against Chelsea and put away the Potters and tighten their grip on third place!
