After recent reports claiming Arsenal’s next big target to be Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen, it has now been claimed by The Daily Mail that Tottenham have opened talks with the Belgian.
There has been many reports linking the Spuds with Vertonghen, where Tottenham scouts watched the defender play Manchester United earlier this year.
It was thought that the lure of former team-mate Thomas Vermaelen could bring the Ajax defender to the Emirates, but reports from The Sun are suggesting that Vertonghen has his eyes set on a move to White Hart Lane.
While Tottenham interest looks concrete, it is still unclear whether Arsene Wenger is seriously interested in buying the player considering the number of centre-backs already at his disposal.
At any rate, if both clubs are going for the Belgian it looks as though whoever secures third position and possesses the lure of Champions League football will have the upper hand.

While Chelsea’s recent loss to Newcastle means it is unlikely they will secure a top-four spot, they still have yet to play the Champions League final. A win would grant them entry into the competition next year at the expense of the club that finishes fourth, in effect making third spot all that much more valuable.
Currently Tottenham trail Arsenal by one point where each team has two games remaining in the season. Simply put, if Arsenal win their remaining games they will secure third spot which may make the difference if speculation about each club signing Vertonghen is true.
Vertonghen’s agent Mustapha Nakhli said on the matter:
There is enormous interest. A number of clubs have made concrete approaches, with Tottenham among them.
Jan has a few dream clubs. Playing at the top of the Premier League is something he has worked really hard for.
