A few rumours flying around today, most notably Andre Santos’ interview that did little to help settle Gooners nerves over the future of captain Robin van Persie. It’s also been reported that Spanish giants Barcelona are after the ‘Gunner-for-life’ Thomas Vermaelen, while Junior Hoilett seems destined for Germany rather than the Emirates.
With Robin van Persie’s contract situation hitting the headlines almost daily, despite the supposed media ban that restricts the Dutchman for speaking about his contractual situation with Arsenal, it’s now team-mate and friend Andre Santos’ turn to depict the cloudy future of his captain.
Santos told ESPN Brasil:
He’s amazing. Besides being a great person, he is also one of my best friends at Arsenal. He is a guy who has given me full support.
He is very intelligent on the pitch. He smashed the Premier League. It helped Arsenal get to where we are, in the Champions League spots, and I have no doubt that he will be one of the stars of Euro 2012.
He has been at the club eight years and this was his best season. Sometimes, a player is interested in getting to know other teams and of course, playing well, he has attracted interest from many other teams. Of course your mind is affected.
He is currently fully focused on the Euros and then, after, he can talk about whether he wants to stay with Arsenal.
While the media are claiming Santos’ quotes are suggesting he is ‘fearing’ the Netherland’s striker will leave Arsenal this summer, it is more his suggestion that Van Persie could be interested in surveying his options.
I’m still adamant that RVP will stay as it looks like Wenger will be indulging in the market after the Euro’s with at least one more big name acquisition. But one of these names will not be Junior Hoilett as the The Daily Mail are reporting the Canadian winger will be joining German side Borussia Monchengladbach this summer.
The 22-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of this month meaning he can leave for ‘free’* from his current club Blackburn Rovers. The talented attacker has been linked with the Gunners for quite sometime as well as the Spuds, Sunderland and Bayern Munich. But it looks like Borussia will beat everyone to the punch and with it deal Rovers a financial blow.
* Bosman Free transfer rules: English clubs hoping to sign Hoilett would have to either agree a fee with Rovers or go to a tribunal because he is under the age of 24. But foreign clubs just have to pay a pre-determined FIFA training fee to Rovers for Hoilett’s development and that is likely to be less than £1m
Meanwhile, Barcelona are reportedly (again from the Daily Mail) considering launching a big money offer for Gunners hard-man Thomas Vermaelen after the Catalan Giants failed to bargain with AC Milan for star defender Thiago Silva.
Apparently the new Barca manager Tito Vilanova made Silva top of his shopping list as the La Liga runners up look to improve their aging backline. But they have been priced out of a deal as even Paris Saint-Germain failed with a reported £32.5m bid. So now the Catalan giants have turned their attentions once again to Arsenal.
But don’t fret Gooners, Vermaelen isn’t going anywhere. The powerful Belgain centreback has already committed his future to Arsenal so he won’t be going anywhere!
