Schalke manager Huub Stevens has admitted he is attempting to lure Arsenal target and soon to be ex-Chelsea striker Salomon Kalou to Germany, but stresses he faces competition from the likes of Liverpool for the Ivory Coast international’s signature.
Kalou’s contract with the Blues expires in June after the forward refused a contract extension with the London club, and has been heavily linked to the Gunners with Wenger a known admirer of the versatile attacker, who is available for free at the end of this month.
The Veltins-Arena now seems the most likely destination with reports suggesting the Ivorian, who spent six years with Chelsea, is eager to leave England in pursuit of regular game time.
The Schalke boss said on the possibility of signing Kalou:
Kalou is a Bosman (Free) player this summer, It’s obvious; there are many other clubs keen on him. Liverpool for example.
But I know for sure he wants to move away from England. This could be our chance.
Personally I had hoped that Kalou could have been enticed to the Emirates especially with compatriot Gervinho now playing for Wenger’s side. He would have been an excellent signing as he already has bundles of Premier League and top level European experience (was a constant threat in the Champions League final), is a versatile attacker that can play out wide or up front, and the fact he would have been a FREE signing would have been perfect.
The main stumbling block for Arsenal would have been his relatively high wages as per usual. But with reports suggesting the Gunners are closing in on Olivier Giroud helps to settle my disappointment over Kalou, however there have yet to be any official quotes from anyone in terms of the French international.
What do you think? Do you feel it is a shame that the Gunners haven’t moved quick enough or at all over free agent Salomon Kalou? Feel free to comment below or on Kalou’s thread in the allArsenal Forum.
