Current Russian captain Andrey Arshavin has put his foot in it by hitting out at his sides supporters, claiming that their disappointment at the country’s elimination Euro 2012 is not the players fault.
The Russian faithful got themselves in a bit of strife with their rebellious antics during their countries Euro 2012 campaign, that came to an early end after loosing to the Greeks on Sunday, and their captain and talisman Arshavin was his usual outspoken and often verbally eccentric self by claiming the knockout was not the players fault.
Arshavin was cited as saying by Russian site Gazeta.ru:
The fact that we have not met your expectations is not our problem.
It’s your problem. When I’m sitting in [Federal House] State Duma, I’ll be held accountable before you.
We lost because we did not score and the Greeks did. These conversations will not change the result of the game.
Statements like this certainly won’t sit well with the Russian supporters, and former Russian Football Union Leader and Fifa vice president, Vyacheslav Koloskov has gone as far to say that Arshavin isn’t captain material after his latest out burst.
Koloskov told Championat.com:
Such words are not worthy of a captain.
Arshavin has never been in the same shoes as those who, at their own expense, travel long distances to support the team.
Recently, I met people from [the far eastern city of] Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, who specifically came to watch good football and cheer for the national team. Many of them risk their health.
The whole team has to bow low before these guys. The supporters come to see good football and total commitment from the players and the desire to stand up for their country.
Instead, the team captain says it is not the players’ problem, but the fans’. I believe that a captain like this should not be in the team.
Not quite sure what Arshavin is thinking really by blaming the fans disappointment on themselves when it was his side that actually failed to beat Greece.
Now that the little Russian is finished in the Poland and Ukraine the last thing he needs is having his captaincy stripped for his latest outburst. He’s had a relatively decent Euro campaign which hopefully will not be too tarnished despite the loss of confidence by many of the fans and the Russian hierarchy towards their captain.
Best thing for Wenger to do is unload him to Zenit asap before he defaces his value anymore!
