The Frenchman has produced some moments of brilliance and is highly rated by not only Wenger and his peers but also the French national coach Laurent Blanc. Yet the injury-prone Abou Diaby was restricted to only five first team appearances last season after a series of niggling injuries that have continually prevented him from making an impression in the Gunners lineup.
The tale for the promising Frenchman’s career took a sour twist that fateful day against Sunderland in 2006 that saw their defender Dan Smith produced a horrendous tackle on Diaby that left the talented midfielder with a severely fractured ankle.
Since then it’s been a long road to recovery, a road that former Gunner Eduardo and youngster Aaron Ramsey have had to partake after their respective horrific injuries, and all three have struggled to regain their former self. But it is important to remember that Diaby has shown glimpses of his ability when he has been fit.
Now that Wenger is rebuffing the squad and Wilshere should hopefully play a part in next season, is there still a place for Diaby at Arsenal?
Rumours have speculated the Gunners are looking to add Yann M’Vila to the acquisitions of Podolski and Giroud, and with the inevitable sales of Bendtner, Vela, Squillaci and maybe Denilson, so many fans believe that Diaby should be on this list too.
He’s been with Arsenal for a massive six years and his contract is not set to expire until 2015, however if he can overcome his injury woes then he could be a massive player for the Gunners, but it’s still a massive IF.
I just hope that his wages aren’t too high (rumoured to be around the £60k per week mark) as he spends majority of his time on the treatment table, but personally I’d like to see the Frenchman remain at the Emirates for one more season to prove that he can become injury free just like Van Persie managed to last season. However if he can’t then it will be time to reevaluate the situation once again next season.
What are your thoughts? Do you think Diaby should remain a Gunner next season? Or do you think it’s time the club parts ways with its more injury-prone player? Feel free to comment below or on Diaby’s thread in allArsenal’s forum.
