The French international has been strongly linked with Arsenal in recent months, but it seems that he will not be coming to the Emirates unless Wilshere or Diaby suffer setbacks before the coming season commences.
Wenger is quoted as saying on M’Vila by official website Arsenal.com:
No [I am not interested]. We wait on Diaby and Wilshere. When you look we have Song, Ramsey, Coquelin, Wilshere, Arteta and Diaby.
In defensive midfielders and box-to-box players we are not short if they are all coming back. If we have setbacks in pre-season it could be different.
Obviously the key players in Wenger’s statement are Diaby and Wilshere. Wenger has labelled the current Tour of Asia as crucial for Diaby, while no definitive date has been put on Wilshere’s return.
Firstly, we all know Diaby has had a torrid time at Arsenal with injuries and while he is a great talent I am reluctant to believe that he will suddenly overcome his injury prone status. Personally speaking, I am unsure whether coming out of a pre-season tour unscathed is worthy of such immense faith.
The season is long and as we have seen in the past, Arsenal’s recurrent weakness is depth in the squad. It is all great when our first-team players are not injured, but when has that ever happened in Arsenal’s recent history?
Secondly, the fact that Wenger is so tentative to put a return date on Wilshere shows how far ahead the return date is. Wenger has already confirmed that Wilshere is extremely unlikely to return at the start of the season.
Arsenal are definitely taking a massive gamble and I am unsure as to whether the benefits of the gamble paying off outweighs the cost of it failing. All the while, I can’t imagine a wanted player like M’Vila is going to wait for Arsenal to assess the fitness of players.
What do you guys think? Will Diaby manage to get his career back on track? Will Wilshere make a successful return? Should Wenger just try and sign M’Vila? Do you think the board is involved? Feel free to leave a comment below.
