While new signing Santi Cazorla has expressed his delight at making a positive debut in the Premier League, he is still hopeful that Arsenal sign some players that can fill the void left by the departures of Robin van Persie and Alex Song.
The little Spaniard had a great debut for the Gunners and put in a quality performance, becoming the creative center of most of Arsenal’s effective attacking plays.
While obviously the draw is not what the Gunners wanted, Cazorla is sure that Arsenal can build on what was largely a positive performance aside of course from the end product in the final third.
Cazorla is quoted by Sky Sport News as saying on his debut and the departures of Song and Van Persie:
It’s clear that Van Persie is a great player and obviously we would all have preferred it if he had stayed. Song has gone as well and there are still 10 days left in the transfer market.
I do not know if we will sign anyone but obviously it’s important to replace players like that because they were so important for the team.
It felt really good making my debut. Of course, it was not the result any of us wanted, but we had chances and we did well.
It’s a long season, so we can build on this. I had one chance and so did a few of my colleagues and that was the key to the game. We had complete control but that final step just eluded us.
With Arsenal opening their campaign with a goalless draw at the weekend with Sunderland, it was pretty clear that the media would jump all over the chance to criticize Arsenal’s new look attack.
Although they did draw blanks, it was always going to be on the cards that they would not fire straight away, especially considering the fact they have only had one pre-season game together. They need more time to prove their worth.
In terms of replacing players we have lost, personally I feel priority number one should be replacing Alex Song. As of now, Diaby is still considered an injury prone player and Wilshere is still a while away from a return.
Reports have been pointing towards the imminent signing of Nuri Sahin on loan from Real Madrid, who could be considered a like-for-like replacement for Alex Song, but personally I would rather see a permanent replacement in Yann M’Vila or another specialist defensive midfielder rather than a deep lying playmaker.
What do you guys think? Who should Arsene get as the replacement? What did you think of Santi’s debut? Feel free to leave comment below or discuss Santi, Sahin or M’Vila in the allArsenal.com forums.
