While reports in recent weeks have suggested that Dutch international Klaas-Jan Huntelaar would be leaving Schalke, German sources now claim he will announce a contract extension at the club in the next few days.
Huntelaar was heavily linked with both Arsenal and Liverpool as a potential signing in January, in particular the former where recent reports also suggested that negotiations were already under way.
However, German sources Westdeutsche Allgmeine Zeitung, DerWestern and Kicker report that despite stating he would be looking at offers elsewhere, he has now decided he will stay put at the Veltins Arena in what is likely to be his very last big contract.
The news will come as somewhat of a blow to Arsenal fans who had hoped that a true top-class front-man would be coming to the Emirates, although in saying this there are still plenty of other options available in January.
One of these is Spainish striker Fernando Llorente, who will no doubt be sold in January despite claims from Athletic Bilbao that they will keep him until the Summer. I heavily doubt they will risk losing him for free. Other options include Edinson Cavani and Newcastle’s Demba Ba.
More simply Wenger could also just keep playing Walcott down the middle or even Podolski, who scored a brilliant strikers goal on Monday. But you feel these two would work better in a partnership than as the lone stiker, but at present look to be more effective options than both Gervinho or Giroud.
What do you guys think? Have we missed out on a gem or are there better buys out there this coming January? Feel free to leave a comment below!
