Former Gunners winger Ray Parlour believes his past manager Arsene Wenger must sell the fringe players that are devouring a huge amount of wages if they want to move forward.
With Wenger under intense pressure at present after a serious of losses including the humiliating quarter final exit of the Capital One Cup at the hands of League Two side Bradford City, Parlour is urging his former manager to re evaluate the squad and return parity to the Emirates.
Fellow ex-Gunner Stewart Robson has said Wenger should be sacked, but Parlour believes the key is to keep the Frenchman but sell the “dead wood” players at the club, consequently allowing Arsenal to buy quality, he told talkSPORT:
It’s going to be so important this January window. The performance the other night [at Bradford] wasn’t good enough.
You go to a place like Bradford and you have got to be on your game. Every single player has got to go out there like they are playing Manchester United.
He needs to get the dead wood out, he needs to get rid of people that don’t want to be there – the likes of Marouane Chamakh and Andrei Arshavin.

They have got so many players who are on about £75,000 a week. They need to get them out.
Arsene Wenger has to look at his players and really up the quality, because he has lost some unbelievable players in the last few years.
Parlour could not have said it much better – we must remove the dead wood, its holding the club and Wenger back. He continually places faith in players that are paid an insane amount that would struggle to make the squad at the likes of Chelsea and the Manchester clubs. Here’s a list of players that need to be sold this January:
Andrei Arshavin *
* = expiring contracts in June 2013.
Gervinho needs to be shipped off as soon as possible, his reputation is continually declining with his horrible touch, terrible decision making, woeful shooting and overall uninspiring play. Djourou’s departure seems inevitable especially with Squillaci chosen over the Swiss international recently and no news of an injury. Santos and Chamakh have just turned out to be average buys and earning too much for bench warmers.
I would also like to see Aaron Ramsey leave on loan this winter. He needs more game time in the midfield and that shouldn’t be with Arsenal, with him in the squad Wenger is too often tempted to play him out wide for some bizarre reason.
I would list Diaby, but he will not fetch much of a price and when he is fit he is an exceptional player. But Wenger must realize this and still reinforce accordingly, not keep betting on his fitness as it will not pay dividends.
