According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal’s fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspuds are set to rival the Gunners for Senegalese powerhouse Mohamed Diame’s signature.
The West Ham midfielder found himself on the bench against Arsenal as his contract drama continues which involves a £3.5m buyout clause that the Hammers are keen to remove with a fresh deal for the boss midfielder.
Tottenham have lost Sandro for the remainder of the season due to injury, so Andre Villas-Boas is apparently attempting to beat the Gunners to the punch and activate the players release clause before Wenger gets a look in.
The report claims Villas-Boas would prefer Joao Moutinho but is resided to the fact that Porto are unlikely to sell in mid-season, therefore they are looking at a bargain alternative in the form of £3.5m Diame.
Arsene Wenger recently stated his admiration for the defensive minded enforcer, while also admitting the short comings his squad faces in that department in midfield.
There will be no surprises from Gooners who have already seen Demba Ba move to Chelsea for a measly £7.5m earlier this month despite reported interest from Arsenal, and we know how that move has/will turn out for the Chavs.
It is worth taking the risk with Diame especially for £3.5m, he is proven Premier League quality that can add steel to the midfield and provide a proper shield for the defence. Even if the move fails to work out Wenger can offload him this summer easily for more than what they can purchase him for. It is worth the Frenchman pursuing Diame and quickly too if AVB is serious about launching a bid.
Do you think Arsenal need Diame? Or that he is good enough to oust the likes of Arteta or Diaby in the defensive midfield role? Rumours are that Wenger is preparing a bid for Dortmund’s Hummels who is predominately a centre half but can operate as a defensive midfielder. However he would be breaking the club transfer record so that seems unlikely…
