Hamburg’s star goalkeeper Rene Adler has expressed his ‘pleasure and honour’ at being linked to the Gunners, however the Bundesliga side have clarified they have not had contact from Arsene Wenger’s side.
Arsenal require a new goalkeeper this summer with Lukasz Fabianski’s contract set to expire next month and no news of fresh terms being offered. Wojciech Szczesny is currently the clubs only high calibre goalkeeper with Vito Mannone used primarily as a back-up who may seek a move away this summer also.
The German goalkeeper raked up 138 senior appearances for Bayer Leverkusen before joining Hamburg in 2012 and has 11 international caps to his name. The shot stopper was first choice for the national team prior to the 2010 World Cup, but a serious rib injury forced him to miss the tournament paving the way for Manuel Neur to take centre stage.
Adler is among the names rumoured to be on Wenger’s radar, and at 28-years-old he would fit the bill nicely for the French manager who is looking to heavily invest in his squad prior to the start of next season.
Despite the growing speculation, Hamburg general manager Frank Arnesen has denied any discussions with Arsenal. He told Bild:
It’s obviously a fact Arsenal FC is on the search for a goalkeeper. But thus far no-one from Arsenal FC has been in touch with our club.
Adler has since revealed he is flattered with the rumours linking him with a move to Emirates Stadium and will use it to motivate him to perhaps catch the eye of Wenger.
The 28-year-old said:
I am under contract with Hamburg, but for every professional it will be a pleasure and honour to get linked with a club like this.
This is flattering. It will absolutely hand me more motivation, I will not lose my focus.
The German goalkeeper certainly ticks all the boxes for me. He would be brilliant competition for Szczesny and has proven his capability on the world stage when he was younger. He is back in the frame for the Germany national team which is no easy feat, and providing he maintains some form for the remainder of the season he could potentially be an astute signing.
What are your thoughts on Adler? Would you prefer him or Fabianski to compete with Szczesny next season? Feel free to comment below..
