Wayne Rooney has officially handed in a transfer request to the newly crowned Premier League champions Manchester United, naturally every club and their mascot have been linked with the striker including the Gunners who are surprisingly fourth equal favourites to sign him this summer.
While departing manager Sir Alex Ferguson claims the England international will not be sold, it’s now inevitable that he’s handed in a request and there is a known rift with the new United manager and Rooney’s former boss Dvid Moyes.
The 27-year-old was left out of United’s squad for the 2-1 win against Swansea at Old Trafford with Sir Alex confirming his transfer request.
He told Sky Sports 1:
I don’t think Wayne was keen to play, simply because he has asked for a transfer.
I think he wants to think it through in his mind – I think that’s a good idea. We’re not going to let him go.
I think maybe he is a bit frustrated. He has been taken off once or twice in the past couple of weeks.
Rooney has been linked with a move to the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain of late who make up the three favourites for his signature. Real Madrid are in the market for a top striker and were heavily linked with the United forward in 2010 when he previously asked to leave Old Trafford before he madr a massive U-turn and signed a five-year contract.
Despite the past link, Arsenal climb into the top four clubs who are most likely to sign Rooney according to Skybet transfer specials, which is an interesting opinion to view for transfer rumours.
Bayern Munich 4/1
Manchester City 20/1
Real Madrid 20/1
The Gunners have been mentioned recently among the clubs to have shown interest in the England international, while there could be some substance in the rumours it seems unlikely they could afford his hearty transfer fee and extraordinary wages.
