Arsenal have confirmed combative midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong underwent surgery on his knee as a result of an injury he collected while playing in Fulham’s final match of the season at Swansea City on Sunday. The 21-year-old had been on loan with the Cottagers since January as he continued his development.
He has had a relatively successful personal season appearing twice for Arsenal in the Capital One Cup, gained experience in a six-week loan spell with Championship side Charlton Athletic and made his debut for the Ghana senior national side however it has ended rather cruelly.
The youngster who has impressed at stages in his career has had his development stuttered by consecutive knee injuries. He has ruptured both ACL’s and now is recovering from his second surgery to his right knee. His potential is there to see however his injury-prone status is a worry especially with his contract expiring this summer – his future is still up in the air.
Arsene Wenger needs a midfield enforcer and Frimpong fits that mould perfectly. He has the physic and power for the deeper midfield role and has demonstrated his precise passing – something that was ingrained into him through the Arsenal academy. He may not be the finished article but will be a useful asset for the future should he shake off the persistent serious injuries.
Frimpong is expected to be back in action in around two months and is expected to play a part in the Gunners preseason preparations.
