Arsenal transfer rumours are into the swing of things already, and now according to Skysport News the Gunners have enquired over the availability of Benfica defender Lorenzo Melgarejo.
The 22-year-old Paraguayan fullback who primarily operates on the left is valued at £5million by the Portuguese outfit is also attracting interest from Fenerbahce, however no official offers have been made as of yet.
Arsene Wenger has funds to spend this summer and the defence/midfield is in the need of some strengthening through some versatile additions – something that Melgarejo can offer who can play in a more advanced role.
Melgarejo’s agent Juan Gabriel Appleyard told Radio Monumental.
Arsenal and Fenerbahce have enquired about Melgarejo. But so far there has been nothing concrete.
The Gunners brought in Nacho Monreal in January to compete with the established, but injury prone Kieran Gibbs for the left back position. So it seems unlikely that they will bring in another first-team quality wingback.
What are your thoughts? Do you think a versatile acquisition should be on the cards that can provide cover for the backs and on the wing? Personally I’d like to see the funds spend somewhere where we actually need reinforcing – centre midfield (defensive and attacking) and a top quality striker. Think we safely dismiss this one as a rumour.
