Arsenal reportedly made an offer for Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier earlier this week. According to French publication Le10 Sport, the Gunners’ bid was less than €10m and was rejected outright by the Ligue 1 club.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder is now in the final year of his contract so Lyon are in a tricky situation. Apparently they’re confident of persuading Grenier to sign an extension but if he fails to do so, the club are going to either be forced to cash in this summer or risk losing him for nothing in 12 months time.
In an ‘exclusive’ the paper claims the Gunners offered below €10 million for French international Grenier earlier in this week but that OL president Jean-Michel Aulas rejected the bid.
Stressing that the ball is now back in Arsenal’s court, the report also claims it’s up to Arsene Wenger to raise the stakes even though the 22-year-old midfielder has only one year left on his contract at the Stade de Gerland.
Arsene Wenger’s interest in the player was confirmed last month when he admitted he was keeping track of his progress and admired his style of play which reminded him of Samir Nasri.
According to Express ,Wenger said :
We are following him. His intelligence of play pleases me. He has interesting qualities. He reminds me of Nasri.
Grenier is technically sound, comfortable with both feet, can run with the ball and is great in deadball situations. He is also vastly versatile, which would allow Wenger to play him anywhere across the middle of the park or behind the striker. And, most importantly for Wenger, he is still willing to learn and to be moulded into an Arsenal player.
However, his strongest and most prominent role is as an attacking midfielder sitting behind the strikers. From this role the 22-year-old has managed to score six goals and notch up seven assists in 21 appearances for his club this season. The midfielder is also shown himself to be adept from set pieces after scoring 2 outstanding long-range free kicks this season, and one goal from the penalty spot.
Grenier looks a perfect fit for both Arsenal and Arsene Wenger.Wenger has a track history of bringing through young players form his homeland and Grenier looks like he could be next in a long line of French talent to play in North London. What Grenier would also add to the club would be an effective set piece taker.
A bid of £8.5m is therefore reasonable given the circumstances but it looks like we’re going to have to dig a little deeper if we want to put the pressure on and tempt Lyon into a sale.
Do you want to see him in Arsenal colours?
