Despite the fact we expected it is going to be a quiet summer in terms of key players leaving, it seems that we are going to have another long summer during which Barcelona will be as annoying as mosquitos on ecstasy.
According to various web-sites, including Goal.com, Laurent Koscielny has popped out as the newest desirable Arsenal player at Camp Nou.
After signing Overmars, Petit, Van Bronckhorst, Hleb, Henry, Song and Fabregas, the Catalan side now wants to add Koscielny to their list of former Arsenal players who would struggle at Camp Nou. After suffering two consecutive exits in the Champions’ League semifinals with an especially painful one at the hands of Bayern Muenchen (0:7 on aggregate), the champions of Spain decided to add fresh blood to their defensive ranks.
And, their favourite way to add fresh blood to their ranks is to suck ours! In order to justify their nickname (Los Cules), Barcelona want to sign Koscielny, probably by trying to use things from his interview in which he stated a possibility of departure if Arsenal fail to regain competitiveness. If the Frenchman – who was arguably the best player in our incredible run-in in the end of the season – leaves Arsenal for the greener pastures of Camp Nou, he should know what happened with Emmanuel Petit, Marc Overmars, Aliaksandr Hleb and Alexandre Song who all found out that Barcelona aren’t all milk and honey like they thought.
Even Henry and Fabregas don’t have too many reasons to brag about their Barcelona career. Perhaps two phone calls from Koscielny to Song and Fabregas would make him stay. Barcelona have problems with their defence as Pique was totally out of shape last season, Puyol is getting older and older while Abidal – who suffered a lot of health problems – left the club after his contract expired.

The current European champions Bayern Muenchen are also interested in signing Koscielny. There is a connection with Barcelona’s desire to snatch our best players as well since new Bayern manager is Josep Guardiola, former player and manager of Barcelona, who was responsible for taking Fabregas away from Emirates to Camp Nou.
Guardiola has already started with a spending spree as he signed Mario Goetze from Borussia Dortmund for 37 million euros. Despite the fact Bayern’s defense was mostly inpenetrable last season, Guardiola wants to add a quality central defender as Bayern rare problems last season mostly came from corners (we scored two out of three goals against them after corners including one goal from Koscielny himself) and Holger Badstuber is turning out to be Bayern’s own Diaby as he suffered two long-term injuries in less than a year.
This Koscielny story might turn out to be a good thing after all. There is a way for our club to make a statement on his example as well. If Koscielny wants a more competitive Arsenal in order to stay in London, than Wenger should start filling the gaps in our team by spending the amount of money needed. Also, by keeping Koscielny, Arsenal would send a message to Barcelona and other clubs that have seen our players as easy targets on the market that we mean business.
What do you think about Koscielny’s possible departure? What should Arsenal do?
