According to the Express Sunderland have made a move for Arsenal goalkeeper Vito Mannone as a replacement for Simon Mignolet.
The Italian has struggled to establish himself ahead of Polish duo Lukasz Fabiański and Wojciech Szczęsny despite some encouraging performances in the Premier League over the past two seasons.
The 25-year-old has spent spells on loan at Barnsley and Hull City since his move from Atlanta in 2005, and has failed to establish himself higher than third choice at Arsenal.
The Black Cats are after a replacement since number one Simon Mignolet recently switched to Liverpool, and the report has suggested Mannone has been lined up as Di Canio’s first choice acquisition.
The Arsenal goalkeeper is reportedly traveling to the Stadium of Light next week for talks with the Wearside outfit.
With Fabianski’s future up in the air with his contract set to expire either this ot next summer (it has failed to be confirmed by the club), the Gunners need reinforcements to battle Szczęsny for the number one shirt.
Arsenal also have up and coming ‘keeper Damian Martinez developing and he could potentially take over Mannone’s third choice spot. It’s time for the Italian to move on, he has the potential to be a decent shot stopper but requires match experience and isn’t quite the calibre we need.
