Arsenal stepped up their attempts to sign Luis Suarez on Tuesday evening by lodging an audacious bid of £40,000,001 for the Liverpool forward, according to the reports in Sun.
The extra quid triggers a clause in the Liverpool hitman’s contract meaning the Merseyside club must inform him of Arsenal’s offer, but Liverpool have turned it down.
The clause demands that Liverpool inform Suarez of any offer in excess of £40m and Arsenal’s bid will only complicate the talks scheduled for Wednesday in Melbourne between the unsettled striker and his Anfield employers.
Having signed a £100,000-a-week four-year deal at Liverpool last summer, Suarez advisor Pere Guardiola, negotiated a clause in the 26-year-old’s contract which entitled the player to be informed of any future bid in excess of £40 million for him.
While the player’s camp may yet choose to interpret the clause as enabling Suarez to leave Liverpool should a bid greater than £40 million be received, the club remain insistent that the only obligation on their part is to relay information of any offer to Suarez.
The new bid was instantly rejected by Liverpool, who have made it clear they do not want to sell the striker, and they will have been unhappy that Arsenal will not take ‘no’ for an answer having had an earlier offer of £35m turned down.
Talks between Suarez and Rodgers are scheduled after the club’s friendly match against Melbourne Victory on Wednesday, when Suarez will be officially informed of Arsenal’s bid. After that, it will be up to Suarez to decided whether he wants to push through for a move to the Emirates.
It is believed it would take a figure of more than £50m to contemplate a change of heart at Anfield. What will concern Liverpool even more is that Arsenal chiefs have already agreed in principle personal terms that offer Suarez a five-year deal worth up to £150,000 a week compared with his existing £120,000 a week.
Suarez scored 30 goals in 44 appearances last season, but was also on the receiving end of a 10-match ban after he was found guilty of biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic. He will serve the remaining six games of that punishment when the new season kicks off.
Suarez is perhaps the best in the world at his position right now. He would undoubtedly spark Arsenal from top four weak link to legitimate contenders for the English Premier League crown and even Champions League honors. But simply acquiring a marquee striker might not be enough to help Wenger end a trophy drought that has lasted eight years.
Suarez is the star name and elite-level talent many fans have been demanding for a long while. But i sincerely doubt that Arsene Wenger will go with an improved bid because he wont risk spending £5om on a single target. The £40m bid also came on Suarez’s agents insistence that it would be enough to sign him.
If Suarez wants he can push through the move. Do you think Suarez is worth more than £40 million?
