The Gunners are set to miss out on their ‘number one’ summer transfer target with the news that Gonzalo Higuain has completed his medical with Italian outfit Napoli along with Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
The 25-year-old Real Madrid striker will shortly sign a reported five-year contract at the Stadio San Paolo for a 40million euro (£34.5million) fee, while the Merseyside shot-stopper will be reunited with former Reds boss Rafael Benitez on a season-long loan deal.
The star duo were photographed heading for medicals at Rome’s Villa Stuart sport clinic and then Azzurri president De Laurentiis took to Twitter to confirm the completed medicals before an image of Higuain with the president and Benitez was posted – effectively sealing the deal.
Through his official account, he wrote:
Higuain and Reina have passed their medicals and will soon join the rest of the group.
On Monday there will be a big party at the San Paolo. You will be able to get to know the new players and the new shirts.
It is a massive blow for the Gunners who had pushed hard for the transfer of the Argentine striker, however it seems their attentions have well and truly turned to the controversial Luis Suarez.

To further rub salt in the wound both Higuain and Reina (once an Arsenal target) could appear for Napoli against the Gunners in next month’s Emirates Cup competition.
This is once again bad news for Gooners around the globe who hoped that Wenger would finally get out the cheque book for a big name such as Higuain. At £34.5m he would represent a better deal than £40m + for Suarez, but now let us hope that Madrid do not manage to snap the Liverpool striker from under our nose and we’re left with nothing.
Majority of Arsenal’s striker targets have now moved on to new clubs so the pressure is well and truly on Wenger and his negotiating team.
