One of Arsenal’s most likely transfer targets for the summer Clement Grenier has ended speculation by signing a two-year contract extension at Lyon.
Arsene Wenger admitted he admired the talented 22-year-old midfielder who was closing in on his final year with the French outfit, and despite Grenier revealing some interest in moving to England, his wish is to continue to develop in his homeland.
Lyon were never wanting to negotiate for one of their most highly rated academy graduates, and now they have managed to fend off Arsenal’s interest by tying the newly capped French international to an extended deal.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas announced to the media on Thursday:
We talked, and as Clement has good people around him and has his head in the right place and his heart with OL, things were finalised quickly. Clement has confirmed his attachment to the club.
The attacking midfielder impressed last season coming into his own during the season run-in and helping Lyon secure progression to the Champions League qualifying rounds.
The midfielder eyed sorting his future before the new campaign and had earlier stressed his mind was already made up. The media suggested he was ready to make the trip across the Channel however it is now clear his main priority was to remain at the Stade de Gerland.

It was difficult for me to relax on holiday as things hadn’t been settled. I found it tough to communicate. In my head, I knew I wanted to stay in Lyon and that it was my priority.
I needed to be psychologically and physically ready to start European competition. This extension is good news for me personally. I’ve had six good months, but I’m not finished improving.
It is a blow for the Gunners to miss out on the French international who has been showing a lot of promise. Wenger compared Grenier’s style to Nasri, and that is the type of player we need to reinforce the midfield alongside a more defensive minded player too.
With Rosicky often injured and not getting any younger, Cazorla proving his ability on the wing and Wilshere not quite the finished article in the more advanced role, Grenier could have gone some way in bolstering the squad.
But now our attentions turn to other targets, and one in particular -Marouane Fellaini. He ticks all the boxes and would go some way in strengthening our squad in any many aspects. The Independent have reported the Belgian is ‘fearing’ his dream move to a Champions League club may come to an end with Arseneal yet to make an approach for the talented and versatile midfielder. Common Wenger get the combative Everton star, he would be a hit with the Gunners.
