Arsenal have confirmed that young striker Joel Campbell will spend this season on loan with Greek champions Olympiacos.
Campbell has failed to make a first team appearance under Arsene Wenger since joining the club in August 2011 from Deportivo Saprissa, moves to the Greek champions to gain further first-team experience.
He has previously completed season-long loans with Real Betis in 2012/13 and FC Lorient in 2011/12. Real Betis had been keen to take the 21-year-old back to Spain for a second spell but it has now been agreed that Campbell will go to Olympiakos.
Having excelled for the Costa Rica Under-17 and Under-20 sides, Campbell has now established himself at senior level, scoring seven goals in 25 appearances for his country since making his debut in June 2011.
He will look to gain further first-team experience before coming back to Arsenal and challenging for a place in Arsene Wenger’s side. The loan move will be good for him as it will give him the game time that he may not get at Arsenal next season.
The Costa Rica international striker originally joined Arsenal in 2011 after a stint of successful trials. He then immediately went out on loan to Ligue 1 side Lorient, where he scored a total of 3 goals in 25 league appearances. He then returned to Arsenal before once again heading out on loan, this time to Spanish side Real Betis, where he endured yet another difficult but ultimately promising season. He scored a total of 2 goals in 32 appearances, meaning overall he scored a measly 5 goals over the course of two seasons.
Of course he hasn’t got much chance of being a regular substitute at Arsenal let alone starter and so I feel the loan spell will help him but he should have been loaned to a Premier league which might have helped him to gain more experience in England. Crystal Palace were reportedly interested in signing him permanently to replace Wilfried Zaha but as Arsenal were only interested in loaning him they back tracked.
I always been an admirer of the young striker and once thought he could possibly be an Henry type of player, after watching his playing style of numerous occasions, however the addition of Yaya Sanogo, has made me think whether we will ever get to see Campbell in an Arsenal shirt, even though his work permit has finally been granted to play in England for the upcoming season.
What do you say Gooners?
