The Gunners are keen to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season and are understood to have had a fresh bid of £40million for Luis Suarez knocked back by Liverpool. They have been linked with a host of other forwards, including Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain, which could mean that Podolski faces greater competition for regular football at Emirates Stadium.
However, the Germany international says that having a strong squad can only benefit the club and he is more concerned about the team performing well than anything else.
According to Daily Mail, he said :
He [Suarez] is a big player. He’s scored a lot of goals so he’s a big striker.
But it’s not my decision to speak about this. It’s a decision for the coach. I don’t know what will happen in the next weeks.
I’m happy when players come in. I want to play with the best players in the world but I’m not scared about big names because it helps the team and it helps me to help the team when we play together.
The coach has his system and we will see what will happen in the next few weeks. At every big club you have competition, particularly at a club of the size of Arsenal.
When all of the players are fit and we don’t have injuries there is big competition. Every player wants to play football and nobody wants to sit on the bench.
The German international, who signed from German side FC Cologne last year, was used as a substitute for the latter part of the season much to the annoyance of both the player and the fans.
Podolski had a good first season at Arsenal scoring 16 goals in 42 appearances. His return of 16 goals is very good and proved all his doubters wrong, especially as he very rarely plays the full 90 minutes or as a central striker. There was a time when he was out of the team and fans noticed, he has become a clear favorite at the Emirates and a player that can win a game on his own.
With a striker being the priority on Arsene Wenger’s shopping list Podolski might get very few chances of playing upfront but he can still contribute as a winger or Wenger can slot him in behind the striker. Podolski’s comments suggest that he is ready for the challenge which is a good sign for Arsenal.
Can Podolski challenge for the striker role next season?
