Arsenal are reportedly preparing to make one final bid of £50 m in order to sign Liverpool want away striker Luis Suarez, according to reports in Telegraph.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers again said over the weekend that Suarez will not be sold to a rival, and his comments have been backed up by Reds owner John W Henry, who also refuses to sell him to the Gunners.
The Reds have already rejected a £40 m plus £1 bid for the striker and are adamant that they will not be selling to Arsenal whom they see as their most attainable rival in the race for the top four.
Suarez earlier this week reiterated his desire to leave Anfield and join a Champions League club, comments that have infuriated Reds boss Brendan Rodgers. The forward has been ordered to train on his own away from the first team after threatening to take Liverpool to arbitration, just as he did at former club Groningen when he tried to engineer a move to Ajax in 2006.
Arsenal’s audacious bid of about £40 m was firmly rejected by Liverpool who have reiterated that the player is not for sale and if he was, it would be for closer to and possibly beyond £50 million. Wenger is under pressure to spend big this summer and still has a transfer budget of around £70 million at his disposal.
Arsenal fans are still agonizing over their lack of business the Gunners have so far brought in only 20-year-old Ligue 1 striker Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer from Auxerre – it’s clear the club and the manager have a big decision to make. After failing to meet Real Madrid’s increased demands for Gonzalo Higuain who has since signed for Napoli, Arsenal have very few options left in the way of top quality strikers who are likely available.
The Gunners have kept Wayne Rooney as a fall back option should they fail to Suarez, but the striker is fixated on a move to Chelsea to play under Jose Mourinho. Meanwhile, Arsenal are also closing in on their first big transfer this summer, with a deal reportedly close for Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo.
The way things have gone so far, one would have to say Arsenal’s options are Suarez or bust. It’s either £50-plus million or nothing and I don’t think the club would ever risk the wrath of their fans by not signing a big name this summer.
Should we make a £50 m bid or go back for Rooney?
