Arsenal have reportedly expressed their interest in signing Manchester City defender Micah Richards, according to reports in Mirror.
The report suggests that Arsenal are looking for a right back who would allow Bacary Sagna to switch to centre half as cover. It further stated that Richards will be willing to move if given an option as it will allow him more games, which will in turn boost his chances of selection for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Arsene Wenger is desperate to strengthen his squad following their disastrous start to the season after watching his side suffer at the hands of Aston Villa who took all three points at the Emirates stadium on Saturday having claimed a well-earned 3-1 win.
The 25 year old has been a self-proclaimed Arsenal fan and is likely to make a move to the Emirates his first option if allowed to leave. In an interview with the Telegraph in 2007, he said :
I was a big Ian Wright fan when I was younger, so I supported Arsenal.
Wright and Patrick Vieira were my idols so if the opportunity came to play for them one day I’d take it.
Richards broke into the first team making his way up through the City academy and made his debut at the age of 17. The defender has gone on to make more than 200 appearances for City, captaining the side on many occasions. The 25-year old has won 13 International caps for England.
Richards has found getting into the City starting line up very difficult since the emergence of Pablo Zabaleta as their first choice right back. The England international was out of favor last season at the Etihad Stadium and played just 7 Premier League matches. The 25 year old defender is reportedly not part of Manuel Pellegrini’s plans at Manchester City, and was even omitted from the match day squad altogether for their 4-0 win against Newcastle United on Monday evening.
Micah is a big, strong and fast defender who can play at both center-back or left back and he has the speed and power necessary to play the kind of high energy wing-back role which Arsenal need at this moment. Still at only 24, he’s young and potentially has many years at the top level in front of him
Should Ricahrds sign for Arsenal, the move would free up Bacary Sagna to move across to center half as cover for the suspended Laurent Koscielny who was sent off in the match against Aston Villa.
However signing Micah won’t be so easy considering Man City will be reluctant to sell him to us but if the right bid goes in i don’t think they will create much nuisance. Micah will definitely add some much needed steel to the defense and his signing would be a welcome sign for the fans who have waited all through the summer to see some transfer activity. Arsenal need some quality signings and Micah will definitely be a good start.
