Arsenal bounced back from defeat against Aston Villa with a convincing victory over Fenerbahce in Istanbul. The Gunners practically secured participation in the Champions’ League and here are the ratings for players who achieved that:
Wojciech Szczesny | 7.5: Virtually had nothing to do in the first half. He was tested on a few occasions in the second but dealt with all threats properly.
Bacary Sagna | 7.5: Started as the right full-back but had to switch into the center after Koscielny’s injury. Did a good job. Sometimes he left too much space for the opponents but it all ended well. He will play there again on Saturday.
Per Mertesacker | 7.0: Sometimes his pace wasn’t the best (which is not exactly something new) but our captain gave a fine performance, all-in-all.
Laurent Koscielny | 7.0: His participation in the match ended prematurely due to injury. His season so far has been terrible – a red card against Aston Villa and an injury that forced him to go to the hospital. Was very solid while on the pitch as he made an important clearance.
Kieran Gibbs | 7.5: He was better in attack than in defence. He scored an important opening goal however and was in a good position for the second but Wilshere opted to finish the attack by himself.
Aaron Ramsey | 8.5: Man of the match. His brilliant through-ball before the first goal and a tidy shot from distance for the second were the important ingredients for our victory. Good to see him add a goal to his endless work-rate. I wonder which celebrity is doomed this time round?
Jack Wilshere | 7.0: Controlled the midfield alongside Ramsey and Rosicky. Had a shot saved by Demirel and on one occasion he failed to notice Gibbs on the left flank.
Tomas Rosicky | 7.5: Another impressive performance from the Czech veteran who gave his best at both ends of the pitch. His perfect tackle after our second goal was an unusual high point for ‘Little Mozart’ who also offered his share of slick passing.
Theo Walcott | 8.0: Was unlucky not to score on two occasions and selfish on another at the very start of the game. Grabbed himself two assists and constantly terrorized Kadlec.
Santi Cazorla | 7.0: Showed some excellent passing including the ball for Walcott that forced Kadlec to concede a penalty. It was visible that he didn’t go with the rest of the team through pre-season.
Olivier Giroud | 7.0: Looked nervous in the first half as he and Bekir were locking horns all the time. Wasted two good chances in the first half but got himself on the score-sheet with a converted penalty. It’s a good thing that he has a continuity of scoring.
Carl Jenkinson | 7.5: Did his job well after replacing the injured Koscielny. Had a very decent shot finger-tipped by Demirel at the very end of the game. His crossing might improve, though.
Lukas Podolski | N/A: Replaced Giroud but didn’t have a chance to impose himself as the game was over after our third goal.
Nacho Monreal | N/A: The Spaniard replaced Walcott and played his first match for Arsenal in 2013-14 but he had too short a cameo to impress.
