Another solid performance and another consecutive year in the Champions League. Our Midfield dominated, putting pressure on the visitors all night and preventing them from getting any meaningful spells on the ball. Here are the player ratings for the 2-0 win over Fenerbahce.
Wojciech Szczesny | 8.0: Aside from a couple of minor decision making errors it was an excellent performance from our giant Pole. He made a number of fantastic reaction saves to keep the Turkish side out and made the game a lot more comfortable for the rest of the team.
Carl Jenkinson | 5.5: A distinctly average game, full of ups and downs from the young Full Back. Caught out of position several times and didn’t have the best time going forward for most of the match. He started to show more promise towards the tail end with a few good runs and crosses. He was almost rewarded with a goal, but was denied by a great save.
Bacary Sagna | 7.0: Another solid game from the out of position Right Back, if you didn’t know any better you would think he had been playing Centre Back all his life. He got turned by Emineke and was left for dead in the second half but an overall good performance. Compliments Per very well.
Per Mertesacker | 7.5: The big German has been our only constant at the back and was his usual reliable self. Showed great positioning, composure and played the ball out from the back very well all night.
Nacho Monreal | 7.0: The Spaniard made a number of good attacking runs tonight and should really have had an assist. He links well with both Cazorla and Gibbs and it’s great to have such competition for the Left Back spot. He occasionally gets caught out of position but has the pace to recover most of the time.
Aaron Ramsey | 9.5: The Welshman continued his marvellous run of form with another great showing. He hardly put a foot wrong all night and scored both goals taking the second as well as any forward. His tireless nature and work rate are astounding and he is fast becoming a vital player for Arsenal. He went off in the last few minutes, hopefully it’s nothing serious.
Jack Wilshere | 8.0: Lots of driving runs and fantastic link up play is what we’ve come to expect from Jack and that’s exactly what he gave us tonight. His tight control and bursts of acceleration are a nightmare for the opposition but unfortunately results in him taking a lot of knocks. His passion for Arsenal will be vital for this weekend’s London Derby so we need him fully fit. His understanding with Santi is becoming a joy to behold.
Santi Cazorla | 9.0: The minuscule Spaniard was pulling the strings all night with a number of fantastic passes. His quick feet can get him out of almost any situation and I was delighted to see him getting back and making a number of tackles deep in our half, resulting in some fast flowing counter attacks. Deserved at least an assist and should have got 1 if it wasn’t for some poor finishing.
Lukas Podolski | 6.5: After a great display against Fulham it was a huge shame to see Podolski’s hamstring go shortly after half time. His bullish character was shown with a number of strong driving runs, one of which led to the first goal.
Theo Walcott | 7.5: Still yet to get on the score sheet for Arsenal this season Theo constantly looks dangerous and was almost put through on goal on a number of occasions.
Olivier Giroud | 6.0: While some of his hold up play was good, his finishing and decision making in front of goal was poor tonight. He’s been in a rich vein of form since the end of last season so we need to hope he doesn’t lose his shooting boots now.
Kieran Gibbs | 7.0: Coming on for the injured Podolski, Gibbs and Monreal interchange very well when playing together. Set up Ramsey’s second goal and made a number of good runs as usual.
Yaya Sanago | 4.5: I am not convinced by the Frenchman at all. His touch, finishing, hold up and work rate were all disappointing tonight, and what else is there to expect from a lone striker? It may be too early to tell whether he will be a success but his performance tonight really let him down.
Ryo Miyaichi | 5.0: Was fairly ineffective for the most part, he got a great cross in near the end which very nearly resulted in a goal but his passing was a little sloppy and was dispossessed a couple of times. One for the future but I still don’t think he’s ready.
