The Gunners lack of spending in the summer transfer window was thrown into the spotlight in the wake of the 3-1 loss to Villa at Emirates Stadium. However the North London club have shoved aside claims of an early-season crisis with back-to-back wins Wednesday’s 3-0 triumph in Fenerbahce, which virtually guaranteed Champions League qualification, and Saturday’s emphatic 3-1 victory at Fulham.
The Frenchman said that the tendency to focus on the negative has been driven by the media’s need for constant news, while also suggesting that his team have lost just once since March in all competitions.
According to Mirror, he said :
The media in general has brainwashed a little bit the Emirates. Maybe rightly so, I don’t know, because we haven’t won trophies for years everything is negative. But we have to live with that and focus on playing well football.
We lost one game since the beginning of March. That’s why it was a shock. But we won in the Champions League at Bayern Munich. We won at Fenerbahce. It is just like that at the moment.
People always want news. We live in a world which is very interesting but very excessive. When people are not loyal, you are critical. When people are loyal, you say they have been there too long. It’s always excessive reaction. The people in charge need to keep their distance from that more than ever.
Someone told me I have had 956 games for Arsenal. I care about this club and when we had last week’s result I was deeply disappointed. This is not a personal trip. This is about doing things well for the club I love and I am happy we are back on track.
Wenger has further reiterated his desire to make additions to his squad before the end of the transfer window closes. He added :
If we can gain one, two or even three more, we will do it. They (the players) want to win the league. They enjoy playing together and this is the first year when we have not been traumatized by losing players.
Arsenal have been linked with many high profile targets such as Suarez, Rooney, Gustavo, Higuain, Bender, Benzema, di Maria this summer but have failed to land any of them, which has led to the criticism from both the media and the fans. It reached peak levels after Arsenal suffered a opening day loss against Aston Villa.
Wenger is right in saying that media has somewhat exaggerated the situation but blaming them to be completely responsible for this situation is inappropriate. The frustration of fans is due to the fact that Arsenal board, who promised a £70 million war chest at the start of window have not kept their word and the team is not looking good enough to compete at the highest level.
I don’t think the situation at Arsenal presently is nothing less than a crisis because we sold out some of our squad players and with less than a week remaining we didn’t even find replacements for them let alone adding to the quality of the squad. I am now having a strange feeling that Arsenal won’t sign any marquee players but will sign some cheap but having potential which won’t be of any use. But with just 6 days to go for the transfer deadline any signing at this stage would be welcome.
Unless a miracle or two happens i don’t see Arsenal signing any quality players. Miracles do happen in transfer dealings but hoping them to happen at Arsenal is a little too much i guess. What do you say Gooners?
