Arsenal rallied over the run-in last season to secure fourth place ahead of Tottenham following a 10-match unbeaten league run. But the Gunners remain without silverware since 2005 and boss Arsene Wenger’s failure to land any major signings has added to the growing sense of unease ahead of Saturday’s Premier League opener against Aston Villa.
But England star Wilshere says there can be no more excuses for underachievement because Wenger’s squad have the talent and desire to restore the club to its’ former glory.
According to Mirror, he said :
We feel we have a great squad, as we showed towards the end of last season, when we went 11 games unbeaten [after losing that game at Tottenham].
So if we can reproduce that form, then we have a chance.
When we had to get the results, we went out there and got them, and that’s what we need to take into this season.
We understand the fans’ frustration, because we care as well.
Arsenal used to be a team that won everything, you know – trophies and titles, but now we haven’t won anything for eight years, so we know what we have to do.
It is time to start producing trophies and being closer to the top of the league at the end of the season.
We don’t just want to be fighting for fourth place – we want to be up there with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United. We feel we are good enough to be there.
Last season, we lost games in cup competitions in which we could have been there at the end.
We lost against Bradford away [in the Capital One Cup] and Blackburn at home [in the FA Cup].
We should never be losing games like that, but this year we have to get over that, grow up a bit and realise that we need a trophy – Arsenal’s too good not to be winning trophies.
We will be in four competitions this year. We know we have to win one of them.
Wilshere made his comeback this season from 15 months out of action with an ankle injury. It was great for Arsenal fans to see Jack Wilshere back playing in the first team again this season. Jack has put in some great performances for the Gunners this season, but he knows he was not been at his brilliant best.
Wilshere has a point in suggesting that Arsenal must grow up because we have been too soft in some matches which have led to the downfall of the team from past few seasons. If we observe these trophy less 8 years we can observe that Arsenal have been brilliant in patches but just aren’t consistent enough to win Trophies and when we had the chance to win them we fell flat against smaller teams.
There were times last season when the Gunners were in danger of suffering a disaster and allowing the Spuds to finally finish higher in the league, but a combination of character and determination saw us go on a splendid late run. But here again we can observe that we just about managed to get into the Champions league slot even after having a great run in the latter part of the season but if we had a good first half to the season we would have been there at the top fighting for the title.
If Arsenal want to compete for the trophies next season they should be consistent through out the season and have that winning mentality, may be a Marquee signing would give them the required confidence.
What say Gooners?
