Sunderland v Arsenal
Barclays Premier League
Stadium of Light
Kick off: September 14, 2013 3:00 PM BST
A match full of controversy saw Arsenal beat Sunderland by 3 goals to 1, but the game was not as easy or clear cut as the scoreline suggests. Here are the player ratings:
Wojciech Szczesny | 5.5: Our Pole in goal had a bit of a shocker between the sticks today, saved from embarrassment only by refereeing decisions on a number of occasions. If he intends to remain our number one for the season then he needs to get his act together.
Carl Jenkinson | 7.0: Fairly solid at both ends of the pitch, Jenkinson supplied a great cross for Arsenal’s second.
Laurent Koscielny | 7.5: Put in a strong shift throughout the game, having to make up for defensive lapses by others on occasions. Was very unlucky to concede another penalty when the replays clearly showed he got a foot on the ball.
Bacary Sagna | 6.0: Was also thankful for a decision or two by the officials, Sagna had possibly his worst game at centre back so far.
Kieran Gibbs | 7.0: Was often caught a bit too far up the pitch, but that was to be expected, with Wilshere starting out on the left but rarely remaining there for long. A solid performance all in all.
Mathieu Flamini | 7.0: A hard player to assess due to his no nonsense attitude and the nature of the position he plays. Did well to break up the play but sometimes slows the pace of the game a little too much.
Aaron Ramsey | 8.5: A definite contender for Man of the Match, the Welshman just keeps getting better. Getting himself on the score sheet twice and being his usual tireless self throughout the match, another quality performance.
Jack Wilshere | 7.5: Creating a few chances and linking up well with Özil and Ramsey, Wilshere adds something different to the midfield. His driving runs make space for others and he was unlucky not to get an assist.
Mesut Özil | 8.0: After meeting with his new team mates only a few days ago it was a bit of a shock to see him start, and he could be forgiven for not performing in his first game as a Gunner. Apparently though, no one told him this, he looked like he had been playing at Arsenal for years, playing a number of fantastic defence splitting passes and linking up superbly with pretty much everyone. He assisted the first goal and should have had a number of others if it weren’t for some poor finishing.
Theo Walcott | 7.0: Perhaps a bit of a controversial rating, Walcott had a number of clear cut opportunities created for him by our midfield and he took a grand total of none of them. His final ball just wasn’t there today and he was extremely wasteful. That said however, he did well to get into these positions behind the defence and he constantly looked threatening despite his lack of killer instinct.
Olivier Giroud | 8.5: My other contender for Man of the Match, Giroud continued his fine goal scoring form with a beautiful finish, after Özil found him with just 11 minutes gone. His hold up play was decent throughout the match despite being up against some big, strong opposition, and he assisted Ramsey’s second goal to boot. Went off injured very late in the game which is a real worry, hopefully it’s nothing serious.
Thomas Vermaelen | N/A: Although he was on the pitch for a good 10 minutes, it was a quiet 10 minutes and he didn’t have much to do. Great to see him back though, hopefully he finds fitness and form soon.
Nacho Monreal | N/A: Only on for a few minutes, didn’t have enough time to make an impact.
Chupa Akpom | N/A: Was only on the pitch for a matter of seconds.
