A slow starting game with a nail biting end. An Arsenal team filled with young gunners, sees Arsenal through to the next round after beating the Baggies 4-3 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes. Here are the player ratings:
Lukasz Fabianski | 7.0: Questionable distribution and a couple of shaky moments, but made the important saves when they counted and did enough to put off the West Brom penalty takers.
Carl Jenkinson | 7.5: An excellent display from the young right back. Although he was caught a little too far up the field at times, his overall performance both attacking and defensively were fantastic.
Thomas Vermaelen | 7.0: A couple of signs of rust, but an overall good performance. He and Mertesacker were very dominant aerially tonight.
Per Mertesacker | 8.0: A dominant display from the German international. Won almost every aerial ball, made some superb interceptions, and his positioning was fantastic. Really solidified a fantastic defensive performance from Arsenal.
Nacho Monreal | 7.0: Possibly the weakest link in a strong Arsenal defence tonight, needing Vermaelen to cover him a number of times. Got forward well though and dispatched the winning penalty superbly.
Mikel Arteta | 7.5: Calmed everything down in midfield allowing us to keep possession. His influence could really be seen when he was substituted late on, our control of the game really slipped away.
Isaac Hayden | 6.0: Was lucky to still be on the pitch after a poorly timed and possibly dangerous tackle. Didn’t look comfortable on the ball and was dispossessed several times.
Thomas Eisfeld | 7.0: Started off slowly, dallying on the ball and with a couple of stray passes, but really grew into the game. Showed some great movement and passing, and took his goal very comfortably.
Ryo Miyaichi | 5.5: Barely started playing until extra time. Was extremely ineffective most of the night, and very wasteful when he eventually did get into good positions. I had huge hopes for Ryo when he was first signed, hopefully injury hasn’t hampered his career too much.
Serge Gnabry | 7.0: Just like against Stoke, he was extremely slow to start. Dispossessed far too easily and with stray passes all through the first half. Picked up his game in the second half though and linked up very well with Jenkinson. Took players on well and put Bendtner through on goal with a perfect pass, which the Dane really should have scored.
Nicklas Bendtner | 6.5: A chance for redemption for Bendtner, which he certainly didn’t take. His hold up play was good at times, but was very wasteful with the chances he did get, and seemed very lazy with his movement which meant he didn’t get many opportunities. Should have scored or at least got his shot away from Gnabry’s through ball. Did provide the assist for Eisfeld’s goal however, and scored the first penalty too.
Chupa Akpom | 7.0: Although there wasn’t much in the way of end product from Akpom tonight, he really added something when he came on. He seemed very willing to make runs, take players on, and worked very hard for the team.
Kristoffer Olsson | 6.0: Although he was on the pitch for quite a while, he didn’t really seem to get on the ball enough to have an impact. The young Swede took his penalty well though.
Hector Bellerin | 6.5: Worked hard and got into good positions, but was a little wasteful with the ball at times. Was played out of position but certainly has the potential to be an excellent right back in the future.
