Arsenal will reportedly re open contract talks with boss Arsene Wenger for a 15 million deal, according to reports in Sun.
The Frenchman completed the club record purchase of Germany international Mesut Ozil from Spanish giants Real Madrid for £42.4 million in the final hours of transfer deadline day. His current deal at the Emirates will expire at the end of this season.
The Gunners were contemplating the future of their long serving boss recently after there have been calls from Arsenal supporters suggesting talks over a new contract with Wenger to be put on hold following the lack of summer signings.
However after comfortably qualifying for the Champions League group stage coupling with the big money signing of Mesut Ozil and derby day victory over Tottenham Hotspur, the Arsenal board are set to offer the Frenchman a new deal.
The report states that the Gunners will be offering Wenger a 2-year contract potentially worth £7.5 million ($11.7 million) per year. Owner Stan Kroenke and chief executive Ivan Gazidis believe the Frenchman deserves a new deal following the Ozil move after the German international revealed a phone call from the manager convinced him to come to the Premier League.
Arsene Wenger, who has been linked with a move back to his homeland to become director of football at big-spending Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain, has won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups since becoming Arsenal manager in 1996.
There are has been quite a lot of argument about Arsene Wenger’s future in recent time. Many Arsenal fans have been against the renewal of his contract as Arsenal manager. Reports earlier in the summer suggested that the club were ready to offer the Frenchman a contract extension but the news generated contradictory reactions from both the fans and pundits alike.
The club’s supporters even wrote a letter to the board to delay the contract talks until the end of the year. However those fans fears have been allayed somewhat with the deadline day capture of Ozil, and owner Stan Kroenke and chief executive Ivan Gazidis believe the signing merits Wenger’s contract talks to be re opened as a priority with PSG lurking in the back ground.
The issue here is that the Gunners have under performed over the last few years. No trophies in 8 years. It will be a massive season for Wenger and the club because if that coveted silverware doesn’t come then there will be massive pressure both on the board and manager alike.
I personally believe that Wenger should stay and actually end his managerial career at Arsenal, it seems we have the funds now to bring in top, top players and glory back to the club. Ozil’s capture suggests that the Frenchman is not done yet.
Should Wenger get a new contract?. What do you say Gunners?
