Arsene Wenger admitted that Olivier Giroud has had to endure a difficult summer amid speculation Arsenal would sign a striker to replace him but insists he can handle the pressure of being the club’s principal forward.
The North London club have been linked with the likes of Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain and Demba Ba but were unsuccessful in landing any of them leaving Giroud as the club’s leading man.
The Frenchman has since been in excellent form this season, scoring in each of the Gunners four Premier League games and Wenger says he has been pleased with the manner of the 26-year-old’s response.
Speaking to Arsenal official website, he said:
Every day when you opened a newspaper he saw another striker coming here but he didn’t say anything. For me that’s the best answer you can give when you’re a football player. Don’t talk too much, play and show how good you are. Many people forget that sometimes but that’s the core of your job.
I believe he has improved technically in his link play and that will come out throughout the season. He has a huge physical presence that is very difficult to find these days. This season is a big test for Olivier but I’m sure he will have a great season.
He has a kind of belief, positive mentality that comes out. He has a good self-esteem and that is a very important quality because when you’re a striker you have to deal with a lot of pressure. It doesn’t affect him too much when he doesn’t always score. Overall I think he has a very strong mentality.
Giroud’s had a great start to this season and it was hardly a surprise considering that last season was his first in England. He was also the side’s top-scorer during the preseason tour and it’s looking like he will better his goal tally of 17 goals from last season.

The Frenchman’s great start should be credited to his improvement in his hold up play and ball controlling. His finishing has been nothing less than excellent considering that he only had 5 shots on goal this season and converted 4 of them into goals which is a stat that even Messi will be proud of.
It won’t be easy for any player when his team are being linked to big name signings in his position but Giroud responded positively to this and has shown his worth on the pitch and proved his doubters wrong.
I think the best part of Giroud is still yet to come and if he can stay away from injuries i expect him to be there with the best in the Premier League this season. With the likes of Ozil,Cazorla and Wilshere behind him i wont be surprised if he double’s his goal tally from last season.
