Mezut Ozil is an Arsenal player. Mezut Ozil is an Arsenal player. Mezut Ozil is an Arsenal.. Nope, still hasn’t sunk in yet…
I can safely say that the entire Gooner world is buzzing like we’ve all drunk a keg of Red Bull with 43 ephedrine pills! I sat up until 12am with my brother (who’s a huge Gooner as well) and when the news came through we screamed like two teenage girls getting slashed by Freddy Kruger – yes we woke up half the neighbourhood but who cares! I don’t care how pessimistic a supporter you are, you cannot tell me you’re not excited by this?!
I wrote some weeks ago that I was sitting on the fence with the whole Arsene Wenger, love him or hate him fiasco, and I would wait until deadline day to finally make up my mind. I also wrote a piece stating the “what-ifs” of Arsenal’s management (Arsene and the board). What-if Arsene really isn’t the stingy bastard many think he is, what if he really was restricted financially because of the stadium debt etc.
I stated that we really do not know what goes on behind the scenes to make early judgement calls, so I decided to wait before I got the daggers out because if it turned out the opposite, I would feel like a right nipple. Well I’m glad I waited…
Yes, this is good news, great news, the best news ever! And I just want to ask one thing from all fans: those who supported Wenger from the start and his decisions, please don’t come out and start slating the others now. The club has been surrounded by so much negativity lately so let’s not spoil the moment; if people start coming out with “I told you so, you plastic glory hunters” etc it’s just going to start a chain reaction of nastiness. Some people have more patience than others, and they chose to trust the club; others have less patience and showed their frustrations. We’re all human and react out of emotion, so let’s not go dragging up old things and just look forward because there’s a new dawn for Arsenal.
The still pessimistic ones will say I’m making too much out of just one signing, albeit a record breaking, world class one at that, but let me explain what this signing actually means. Sorry I took so long to get to the point, my brain is still doing the 100m dash so bear with me.
Firstly, it has utterly obliterated our previous transfer record! We now know that our club is NOT scared to “splash the cash”. It means that, while we still don’t know every detail of the past 8yrs, we now know that it really was the stadium debt keeping us from spending. In hindsight, was 8yrs a long time to wait for the club to secure the financial platform we now have? I think not. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not making it out as if the barren trophy run is suddenly going to end, but we’ve never had the realistic hope of competing at the top of the league before, but now I feel we do. I think those who were labelled as “glory hunters” were actually “ambition hunters”.
Most fans just wanted the club to show ambition; even if we didn’t win something we just wanted the club to add the players that would give us a chance at the title. Now, for the first time in a long while, I feel confident about competing for the title. That’s what this acquisition has shown the world – Arsenal FC has ambition!
Secondly, this signing puts us in a whole new category of elite in terms of players we can now attract. A great stadium and CL football was always an attractive prospect for potential players to join us, but the cherry on top for any player is the opportunity to play alongside the best players in world football.
Shall I remind you that Jose Mourinho called Ozil the best number 10 in the world? So this means going forward, in future transfer windows, we will have a better chance at signing more world class talent.
On that point, let me reiterate something I’ve written previously; we already do have many world class players; unfortunately they’re not recognized as such because they don’t have the winners medals to accompany their talent, but make no mistake, we have more than 1 world class player at Arsenal. Back to my point, this is going to create a snowball effect for future transfers, so good times ahead!
Thirdly, we will never have to have to be nervous or skeptical about going in for big name players again. If you had told me 2 weeks ago we were going in for Ozil I would say ‘aint gonna happen, and I’m sure most of you would have agreed. In fact, even yesterday when I heard about Ozil and Di Maria, I said, Di Maria maybe but Ozil, no chance. You could forgive one for thinking that way because we’re just not used to seeing big names come in. When the Suarez saga was going on I bet my brother it wasn’t going to happen, I told him if it happened I would shave my head, and if it didn’t I would shave HIS head.
That reminds me, I need to shave his head… Anyway, my point is, in future when a big name signing is linked with Arsenal, we can feel confident that nobody’s head is getting shave. Let’s all strut about with our noses in the air now, shall we?
Fourth. Someone on Football Today said that “Arsene has never really made a marquee signing before; he’s always bought unknowns and transformed them into world class, so perhaps he doesn’t know how to sign the big players”. They also pointed out that Bergkamp was somewhat of a marquee signing but attributed that to David Dein. Well, this signing has proved that our boss hasn’t lost his mojo yet.
The original reports on the move was that Ozil didn’t really fancy coming to the Emirates, but after sealing the deal he said it was the conversation with Arsene Wenger that showed him this is what he has been missing. So yes, Wenger CAN make marquee signings.
Fifth, and I really could go all the way to 25 but I’ll wrap it up here, we have made a statement to all the other teams in Europe: We’re here to play!!
Some fans have been feeling that Arsenal are not feared like we used to be; I believe this signing will give Arsenal the fear factor again. Do you guys realise that we’ve made THE biggest signing of the summer in the EPL?? Negredo, Jovetic, Lamela, Eriksen, Willian – they don’t seem like such big names now do they? In our 4-2-3-1 formation we would have Cazorla, Ozil, Walcott! That makes me scared and I’m an Arsenal fan haha! Behind them we can choose between Arteta, Wilshere, Ramsey, Flamini, Rosicky. I can’t think of another EPL team with a stronger midfield, can you? It’s also interesting to note that if we did pay for Flamini and Sanogo we would have ended up the 3rd highest spenders in this window. Makes getting Flamini on a free sound like good business now, doesn’t it?
At the beginning most fans agreed we needed depth in our spine: GK, CB, DM and a quality striker. I know we’re still short in some departments, my only concern now is simultaneous injuries to our CB’s and RB positions, but Flamini can cover there as well (not ideal I know). Well we’ve done most of it; we have a new GK. I don’t know enough about him to comment so I’ll trust Wenger’s judgement, and besides, anybody would be better than Fabianski.
We don’t have a new CB but we should be able to cope, unless we get hit with a catastrophe of injuries. We have a good holding midfielder in Flamini, if you watched the Spurs game you would have seen this. We have a new (WORLD FRIKKEN CLASS!) attacking midfielder, which I know we didn’t really need (although we did need the morale booster a big name provides) but this means Cazorla will stay out on the left, leaving Poldi to rotate with Giroud.
As for a new striker, we did try to sign Ba but that didn’t work out, and to be honest, the way Giroud is performing I’m prepared to give him the season as our main striker – I think he’ll surprise us, and having someone with a rocket attached to his left foot as back-up isn’t that bad? We may move for a striker in January but with the form Giroud is in, I’m not really fazed. So apart from a slight worry in the CB department, we’re good to go. We have a great squad now, we’re on a great run (2 losses in the last 19 games) and we have everything to look forward to!
I know the club hasn’t done everything perfect, and perhaps we need to realize they are human too and have made some mistakes in the past. Maybe they should have acted earlier in the transfer window and signed a CB and a striker. We can always go back and find faults because our club’s management is not perfect, but no club’s is. Let’s not go back and look for negativity, God knows we’ve had enough of that!
Let’s not go back and pick on other fans who said X Y and Z. We’re all human, but we all have one thing in common, and that is we LUUUUURRRRRVVVVV our club!! If anything, I hope the arrival of Ozil unites our fans in common belief because we’ve been divided for far too long now.
So common’ Gooners, let’s get behind the team (that includes the manager) and cheer them on. The future is bright, the future is red and white!!!!
