Arsenal are reportedly set to renew their long term interest in Napoli midfielder Gokhan Inler, according to reports in Talk Sport.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been a big admirer of the Swiss international’s talents over the years, and was interested in acquiring Inler’s services during his Udinese days.
However the tough tackling midfielder made a switch to the Serie A giants Napoli in 2011, and recently featured against the Gunners in the 2-0 Champions League defeat at the Emirates.
The report claims Wenger is ready to renew his interest in the January window after Inler’s impressive start to the season and the Gunners are reportedly preparing a bid in the region of £12.5 million for the Swiss come winter.
However, the Premier League leaders aren’t the only ones looking to land the talented midfielder, as Galatasaray coach Roberto Mancini is also reportedly keen on signing the player in January.
Wenger is keen on adding an extra defensive midfielder to his setup, in order to provide stiff competition to the likes of Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini for a first team spot.

Inler started his career at Basel in Switzerland, but moved to Aarau without getting a game in Basel. Six months later he was snapped up by the Swiss giants FC Zurich and won the League with them for the next two seasons. His performances brought him to the attention of Udinese and his hard-tackling style was thought to be suited to Serie A and then moved to Napoli in 2011 and put in some impressive displays.
He is a combative midfielder and also possesses technical ability. He is considered the rock between the defence and the midfield for both Napoli and Switzerland and rightly so. He has the knack of stopping anybody who tries to get past him and when he regains the ball he can spark a counter attack or play a deadly pass straight into his attacking team-mates. He has scored nine goals in a total of 100 appearances in all competitions for Napoli during his two years at the club thus far and has 67 caps for the National team.
Mathieu Flamini is the club’s current first-choice holding midfielder and has been excellent so far this season, but has struggled with injury in recent weeks. He hasn’t played more than 25 games in a season since 2009, and faces up to two weeks out with a groin injury aggravated against Norwich.
Inler is undoubtedly very talented but I don’t think Arsenal need him because we already have Arteta and Flamini who are in the same age group as the Swiss international, so I feel the Gunners should rather go for a younger option Lars Bender may be, who could help the team in the longer run.
