Arsenal are reportedly stepping up their interest in Borussia Monchengladbach winger Patrick Herrmann, according to reports at TalkSport.
The young German is a mainstay of the Monchengladbach first team, having started all eight of the club’s Bundesliga matches this season, helping them keep pace with Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
Wenger has been keeping a close tab on the development of the 22-year-old who represented Germany at the European Under-21 Championships in June. Following his impressive performances, he has been called up for the senior international side, but has yet to make his debut.
The report states that the youngster would cost in the region of £13 m and has a contract till 2016. Napoli, Juventus and Tottenham are thought to be interested in him and are equally monitoring his progress . Herrmann has entered the last two years on his contract, and without firm evidence that a new contract is in the pipeline, the club are vulnerable to cut price bids from rival continental sides including Arsenal.
Herrmann is 22 years old and has been with Borussia Moenchengladbach since 2008, making more than 100 Bundesliga appearances. He has one goal and two assists in eight appearances so far this season while last season he scored six goals and also created six. He has represented the German U-21s 14 times scoring 3 goals.
He basically plays on the right of the midfield but is just as comfortable playing centrally or on the left, and even at right full back and likes to get in to the box. However his crossing is not up to the mark and needs to improve that part of his game, something which may discourage Wenger as he looks to bolster his winger options
The Gunners already have plenty of quality options in the wide positions, though the signing of Herrmann could perhaps see the likes of Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott move upfront and aid the club with their lack of depth in that department, though a number of big-name strikers have also been linked as targets for Wenger this January.
Arsenal will face tough competition from Juventus and Tottenham as they have reportedly watched the player as well and may be forced into bidding for the player. However Wenger’s German contingents including Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Serge Gnabry might be able to convince Herrmann to join the Emirates.
